Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a mild, pleasant, aromatic odor used primarily as a solvent in paints, inks, and epoxy, and as a bacteriostatic preservative in medications and cosmetics. It acts as a local anesthetic for treating head lice and skin infections. While generally safe in low concentrations (up to 1%), high exposure or use in newborns can cause severe, fatal toxicity (“gasping syndrome”).
