Common uses

• Emollient: It softens and soothes skin by creating a protective layer that traps moisture.
• Thickening agent: It adds viscosity and body to lotions, creams, and shampoos, creating a richer, more luxurious texture.
• Emulsifier and stabilizer: It helps keep water and oil-based ingredients from separating in a formulation, ensuring a consistent and smooth texture.
• For skin: Found in moisturizers, it hydrates and softens skin without clogging pores. It is also used in topical medications for conditions like dry, rough, or scaly skin, as well as minor irritations such as diaper rash.

• Generally safe: The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) expert panel has concluded that cetyl alcohol is safe for use in cosmetics. The FDA has also deemed it safe for use as a food additive.
• Low toxicity: Studies indicate that cetyl alcohol has low toxicity and is not considered carcinogenic.
• Not drying: Unlike simple alcohols like ethanol, fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol do not dry out or irritate the skin. Products containing cetyl alcohol can be labeled “alcohol-free” because it is a fatty alcohol.
• Possible irritation: While rare, some individuals may experience a skin reaction, such as redness, itching, burning, or allergic contact dermatitis. A patch test is recommended for those with sensitive skin.
